Ohio Minimum Auto Insurance Requirements

By Tanu Menon

Ohio's state-minimum auto liability limits (25/50/25) explained — and why higher coverage often makes sense.

What Ohio requires

Ohio is an at-fault state. Drivers must carry liability insurance that meets Ohio's financial responsibility minimums.

Current Ohio minimum liability limits are commonly shown as 25/50/25:

  • $25,000 bodily injury liability per person
  • $50,000 bodily injury liability per accident
  • $25,000 property damage liability per accident

Minimum vs. recommended

State minimums satisfy the legal floor. They may not protect your savings, home, or income if you cause a serious crash. Many drivers choose higher liability limits for stronger protection.

Other coverages to consider

  • Collision and comprehensive
  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist
  • Medical payments
  • Rental reimbursement and roadside assistance
