Texas Minimum Auto Insurance Requirements
By Tanu Menon
Texas state-minimum liability limits explained — what 30/60/25 means and why many drivers need more coverage.
What Texas requires
Texas is an at-fault state. Drivers must carry liability insurance that meets state financial responsibility minimums (or qualify under another allowed form of proof).
Current Texas minimum liability limits are commonly shown as 30/60/25:
- $30,000 bodily injury liability per person
- $60,000 bodily injury liability per accident
- $25,000 property damage liability per accident
Personal Injury Protection (PIP) is often included by default on Texas policies, but you can usually reject it in writing.
Why minimum coverage may not be enough
Medical bills and vehicle repairs can exceed low limits quickly. If damages go above your policy limits, you may be personally responsible for the rest.
Coverages worth reviewing
- Higher liability limits
- Collision and comprehensive
- Uninsured/underinsured motorist
- Roadside and rental reimbursement
