Virginia Minimum Auto Insurance Requirements
By Tanu Menon
Virginia's updated minimum liability and uninsured motorist requirements — what 50/100/25 means for drivers.
What Virginia requires
Virginia is an at-fault state. Drivers must carry auto liability insurance that meets state minimums (unless another allowed financial responsibility option applies).
Virginia's current minimum liability limits are commonly shown as 50/100/25:
- $50,000 bodily injury liability per person
- $100,000 bodily injury liability per accident
- $25,000 property damage liability per accident
Virginia also requires uninsured/underinsured motorist (UM/UIM) coverage at matching or related minimum levels, so you have protection if another driver has little or no insurance.
Why Virginia raised the bar
Higher minimums help close the gap between older limits and today's medical and repair costs — but they can still fall short after a major accident involving multiple vehicles or severe injuries.
Coverages worth reviewing
- Higher liability limits above the state minimum
- Collision and comprehensive
- UM/UIM above minimum
- Rental and roadside options
