At-Fault Auto Accident Claims: What to Expect
By Tanu Menon
How at-fault collision claims typically work, which coverages may apply, and steps that help protect you after a crash you caused.
When you are at fault
If you cause an accident, your bodily injury and property damage liability may help pay for the other party's injuries and vehicle damage (up to your limits). Your own vehicle repairs usually need collision coverage, subject to your deductible.
What to do at the scene
- Check for injuries and call emergency services when needed
- Stay at the scene as required by law
- Exchange names, phone numbers, and insurance details
- Photograph vehicles, plates, damage, and the intersection
- Avoid admitting fault in the moment — stick to facts
After you report the claim
Your carrier may assign an adjuster, request a recorded statement, and arrange repairs or a total-loss evaluation. Keep track of rental needs if you have rental reimbursement.
Coverage gaps to watch
State-minimum liability may not be enough after a serious crash. Review limits before you need them. General quote request · Claims contacts · 469-269-6539
