Hit-and-Run Auto Claims: How Coverage Usually Works
By Tanu Menon
What to do after a hit-and-run, when uninsured motorist and collision apply, and how to document the loss.
Hit-and-run claims are stressful — act quickly
If another vehicle hits you (or your parked car) and leaves, call the police when appropriate, document everything you can, and report the claim soon. Delayed reporting can make the claim harder.
Coverages that may apply
- Uninsured motorist property damage or collision-related UM options (rules vary by state and policy)
- Collision coverage for your vehicle repairs, subject to deductible
- Medical payments or PIP for injuries, depending on your state and policy
What to document
- Time, location, and direction of travel
- Description of the other vehicle and plate if you saw it
- Camera footage from nearby businesses or doorbell cameras
- Photos of damage and debris
- Police report number
Prevention tip
Park in well-lit areas when possible and consider cameras. After a loss, start with our claims process or call 469-269-6539.
