Parking Lot Auto Claims and Disputed Fault
By Tanu Menon
How parking lot fender-benders and disputed-fault claims often work — and how to document who hit whom.
Parking lots create messy liability questions
Low-speed parking lot crashes are common — and fault can be disputed when there are no cameras or witnesses. Backing claims, lane disputes in lots, and door dings all show up frequently.
Strengthen your documentation
- Photograph both vehicles' positions before they are moved (if safe)
- Capture the full parking lot context, not just close-ups of dents
- Get witness names when possible
- Note nearby cameras (stores, apartments, doorbell cams)
- Avoid arguing — exchange information calmly
Insurance handling
Carriers may use statements, photos, and damage patterns to assess fault. Your collision coverage can help you repair your car while liability is sorted out, subject to deductible and policy terms.
Prevention habits
Drive slowly in lots, avoid phone use while backing, and pause at ends of rows. Need help after a parking lot claim? Claims page · 469-269-6539
