Rental Car and Loaner Vehicle Claim Scenarios
By Tanu Menon
What to know if you damage a rental or loaner — whose insurance applies, and how to avoid claim surprises.
Rentals and loaners are easy to misunderstand
If you crash a rental car or dealer loaner, coverage may involve your personal auto policy, the rental company's options, a credit card benefit, or a combination — depending on the contract and your policy.
Before you drive away
- Ask what collision damage waiver (CDW/LDW) covers and costs
- Confirm whether your personal auto policy extends to rentals
- Check your deductible and any rental exclusions
- Photograph the vehicle before leaving the lot
- Understand rules for additional drivers
If a claim happens
Report it to the rental company as required, document damage, and notify your insurer promptly. Keep the rental agreement and all incident paperwork.
Coverage review tip
If you rent often, ask about rental reimbursement and liability adequacy on your personal policy. Contact Tan's Agency · Claims contacts · 469-269-6539
